THE DREAM LIFE OF BUTTERFLIES BY RAIMONDO CORTESE
DIVINE SECRETS OF THE SISTERHOOD
The signature prose of Raimondo Cortese finds the perfect home at MTC’s Lawler Studio. His new play The Dream Life of Butterflies, featuring Margaret Mills and Natasha Herbert, and directed by Heather Bolton, opens Friday 4 March, 2011 at 7pm in the intimate Lawler Studio.
Two middle-aged women talk in a room. One is recently returned. One has always been there. Between them sits their past. The Dream Life of Butterflies is a beautiful dissertation on the illusion of memory and the impossibility of retrieving what has been lost.
In a seamless single scene, award-winning writer Raimondo Cortese exposes their delusions about themselves and each other, hinting at the terrible taboo at the heart of their relationship. Raimondo Cortese has masterfully penned a script that reproduces the cadences of conversation uncannily close to real life. The Lawler Studio is the perfect space for the audience to closely follow Cortese’s intricate characters and their slowly emerging pasts. Adding to Cortese’s distinct style of writing is harpsichordist Anastasia Russell-Head, who will punctuate the sisters’ conversation with melodies from baroque operas. Cortese is a playwright and founding member of Ranters Theatre. His plays include Intimacy, Features of Blown Youth, St Kilda Tales, Roulette, Lucrezia and Cesare, Holiday, The Wall, The Room, The Fertility of Objects and The Large Breast or the Upside-Down Bell. He has also written for film, television and radio. Having acted in many of Cortese’s plays such as The Wall, Affection, and Roulette 3, Heather Bolton swaps sides to sit in the director’s chair in her MTC debut. A play reading of The Dream Life of Butterflies was presented as part of MTC’s 2010 Cybec Readings. ‘This is very exciting work ... unbearably tense and wildly comic, and always utterly contemporary’ Daily Telegraph ‘Raimondo Cortese’s writing is delightful’ Herald Sun ‘They [Raimondo Cortese’s plays] are immediately recognisable to Australian audiences.’ The Age ‘One of the most exciting playwrights around’ The Age Director Heather Bolton Set and Costume Designer Marg Horwell Lighting Designer Jenny Hector Cast Natasha Herbert (Vanessa), Margaret Mills (Zelda) Musician Anastasia Russell-Head The Dream Life of Butterflies Venue: The MTC Theatre, Lawler Studio Season dates: 2 March to 2 April, 2011 Opening night: Friday 4 March, 2011 at 7pm Tickets: From $25 Booking details: The MTC Box Office 03 8688 0800 or mtc.com.au The Dream Life of Butterflies was developed with the support of The Cybec Foundation.
